Acts of Mission -- September 6, 2009

This week inaugurates a new sermon series entitled "Acts of Faith," which examines the life and growth of the early church as an example and model for the church in our day. We begin at the beginning, with the Ascension and Jesus' instructions to his disciples to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. This sermon argues that mission is not something that the church does; it is what the church is. We are all missionaries. This sermon used video illustrations from The Simpsons and Trinity Wall Street, St. Paul's Chapel. Scripture:
Acts 1:1-11

*I am indebted to several authors for ideas in this sermon, especially Anthony B. Robinson and Robert W. Wall, Called to be Church: The Book of Acts for a New Day, and Brian McLaren, A Generous Orthodoxy. Video clips are from The Simpsons, Season 11, Episode 15, "Missionary Impossible," and Trinity Wall Street's video entitled, "Ground Zero Spirituality at St. Paul's Chapel," available at www.trinitywallstreet.org.
